MUTIFOCAL IOL IMPLANTS (ReSTOR)
A cataract is the clouding of the natural lens of your eye. During cataract surgery an intraocular lens (IOL) is used to replace your natural lens. The most common IOL used in cataract surgery today is called a monofocal IOL. This has a fixed focal point usually for distance vision and you would wear glasses for reading afterwards. These IOLs have been used for decades with excellent visual results and a high level of patient satisfaction.
With recent advancements in intraocular lens technology came the multifocal intraocular lens. The ACRYSOF® ReSTOR® Multifocal IOL was approved by the FDA in March 2005. This uses a design to help achieve a full range of vision including reading, intermediate and distance reducing your dependence on glasses. Clinical studies used to support the FDA approval showed 80% of patients did not use glasses after cataract surgery using a ReSTOR IOL.
